Module Aims

To examine the structure and function of body systems in health and disease.

To identify the chief mechanisms of disease and explore the causes of common long term conditions in the UK

To develop understanding of measurement, evaluation, instrumentation and normative data in health, illness and disease

To develop an understanding of the role of health and social care professionals in the holistic management of disease.

Content Summary

The language and terminology of anatomy, physiology and pathology

Body organisation, cellular structure and cellular processes in health and disease, including chief mechanisms of disease?and the role of homeostasis in the regulation of body systems

Anatomy and physiology of body systems: skeletal system, muscular system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, nervous system, digestive system, endocrine system, urinary system, and circulatory and lymphatic system

Overview of causes of disease (genetic versus environmental) and the major chronic diseases affecting the UK population, including both physical and mental illness

Disease states, causal pathways and disease progression in body systems Lifestyle factors in health, illness and disease

The importance of health and the impact of disease on holistic health

Measurement and evaluation in health and disease – instrumentation, procedures and normative values, data interpretation and monitoring.

Exploration in more detail of one chronic disease pathway, identifying the links to anatomy and physiology, and exploring holistic assessment, role of health and social care professionals, how to access evidence based information on management and linking to disease prevention.
