Module Aims

To identify, understand and critically evaluate change management and leadership theories that are relevant to the leadership of change in health and social care services.

Evaluate the role of leadership and management within case studies of change management to understand the drivers of change (e.g., delivery of person centred outcomes, resource consolidation and service improvement).

Develop an understanding of consultation and equality impact assessments intended to facilitate responsive and appropriate decision making in relation to change.

Content Summary

1) Theories and models of change management as well as different types of change such as planned change, rapid and discontinuous change as well as crisis management and ‘culture shock’ within organisations and communities. Strategic leadership for health and social care organisations and how to develop a vision / communicate a vision for change.

2) Theories and models of leadership. Critical analysis of leadership styles, appropriate and inappropriate leadership influencing outcomes for individuals. Managing conflict and resistance during change management. Development of insight into one’s own leadership style, personality and preferences during interaction with others (e.g. avoidance or confrontation during conflict) and how this is likely to impact upon one’s approach to the leadership and management of change.

3) Stakeholder analysis and the role of advocacy in influencing and leading change. Empowering individuals and communities for change. Equality impact assessments during consultation and the leadership of change within diverse communities.

4) Effective prioritisation. Decision-making and setting priorities in health and social care practice. Project management / identification of the stages of change. How to manage a project involving change clearly identifying the different stages. Risk assessment; Consideration of risk from economic, health, social and political perspectives and application of risk assessment tools.

LO1 Demonstrate critical in-sight into theories and models of change and effective leadership through the analysis of a range of leadership styles and strategies that can that be developed and used to implement change.
LO2 Consider the role of leadership in change management paying regard to citizen involvement (including advocacy), risk analysis, project management and equality impact assessments to demonstrate accountability and responsiveness in decision-making.
