Module Aims

Demonstrate professional, technical and formal choices which realise, develop or challenge existing practices and traditions with regard to media law, ethics and regulations, and the possibilities and constraints involved in the production process.

Demonstrate ability to reflect on ethical dilemmas in relation to sports journalism and communications practice.

Content Summary

An exploration of ethics as an invitation to excellence and quality of information. Students will be required to critically analyse the key issues around ‘one-sided’ reporting of clubs or events; impartiality and neutrality in sports news; professional and personal relationships with contacts; conflict of interest including dealing with ‘freebies’; sexism and racism in sports reporting; the ethical challenges of covering live events etc.
