Module Aims

Immersive learning will form a basis for the introduction to this module to teach basic skills in developing confidence, initiative and imaginative approaches to media and processes in 2D and 3D.

To enable the application of these skills to other developmental modules in art practice and relate the principles, methods and processes of one skill to another.
To teach good practice in health and safety.

Content Summary

Part one of the module will relate practices and applications of Painting and Digital Media to one another.
Within the Painting component you will be provided with instruction in the use of oil paint, mediums and solvents, painting supports, grounds, primers. There will be an introduction to colour theory, vibrating and vanishing boundaries, optical mixing, interpreting space and colour equivalence. You will learn to compose, manipulate, layer and combine new and existing forms and images.
Within the Digital Media component, you will explore ways in which Adobe Photoshop tool palettes are used in relation to manipulating images, familiarisation and blanket alterations. You will build an Image Bank and learn to take images apart, storing files in order to re-use these individual units at a later stage to make original, innovative and dynamic compositions.

Part two of the module will relate practices and applications of 3D mixed media and printmaking to one another.

Within the 3D component you will explore working with a range of mixed media: wood, metal, plastics, found objects, composite materials, manmade and organic fabrics. In the 3D workshop, you will learn about basic construction skills, tools and equipment. You will use this knowledge and understanding to develop final constructed outcomes in the studio.
The Printmaking component introduces students to the principle methods of mono-printing, screen-printing, intaglio and relief printing. Emphasis will be given to low technology, experimental and innovative approaches.

All taught sessions as well as experimental practical work will be complemented and informed by independent research into the work of other artists. Visual journals will be used for primary sources, observational research and concept development. Blogging will be used to evaluate your creative process and to reference secondary sources to engender openness to the work of other artists and approaches. Blogging will be formatively assessed within this module and will contribute to the summative assessment of Art Practice 1.2.
