To teach good practice in health and safety

Content Summary

Part one of the module will relate practices and applications of Drawing and Ceramics.

Within Drawing you will be introduced to a multiplicity of approaches, emphasis will be on formal drawing systems, empirical approaches to drawing, drawing from observation and using the work of other artists through transposition. Formal drawing systems such as perspective or parallel projection, principles of measurement and proportion, composition and spatial representation through the manipulation of light and tone are introduced. Empirical approaches to drawing are undertaken in the form of experimental mark making and drawing in three dimensions.

Within Ceramics you will be experience various ceramic hand-building and construction methods as well as being introduced to different clay bodies and ceramic materials. A variety of ceramic surface treatments will be explored to develop visual and tactile skills. All taught sessions as well as experimental practical work will be complemented and informed by independent research into the work of other artists, their use and manipulation of a broad range of traditional and non-traditional ceramic disciplines.

In Part two of the module Life Drawing, you will be introduced to ways of looking at the structure of the human figure. Direct observational drawing will examine principles of measurement and proportion, defining the figure using line and tone, experimenting with viewpoints and environmental contexts.
All taught sessions as well as experimental practical work will be complemented and informed by independent research into the work of other artists, their approaches and agendas in depicting the model and the body. Visual journals will be used for primary sources, observational research and concept development. Blogging will be used to evaluate your creative process and to reference secondary sources to engender openness to the work of other artists and approaches. Blogging will be formatively assessed within this module and will contribute to the summative assessment of Art Practice 1.2
