Module Aims

To provide students who have an on-going involvement in Rugby Union with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to deliver a coaching programme and demonstrate their rugby union coaching ability.

The module offers an opportunity for students to be given support to effectively apply the principles of performance profiling, goal setting and designing, planning and evaluating a rugby union coaching programme and practice. It enables the student to create an effective coaching environment, establish supportive working relationships and manage the behaviour of players and others.

The module provides an understanding and the application of the underpinning Level 3 NOS in coaching, teaching and instructing and the level 3 Rugby union technical definition and Assessment specification.

Content Summary

The module enables students to establish and maintain a safe coaching environment for adult players and others. Students will create an effective coaching environment, establish supportive working relationships and manage the behaviour of players and others.

Students will gain an understanding and be able to apply the principles of designing and planning a coaching programme. Students will be required to demonstrate their competence in the coaching environment. All assessment evidence should contain a record of the student applying design and planning principles in a real (non-simulated) coaching environment with appropriate groups of players.

Students will evidence knowledge and understanding of how to establish the current and potential performance needs of rugby union players. The modules aims to help students to understand and apply the principles of analysis and goal setting, to undertake research and to involve players in the analysis of performance needs and aspirations.

Students will monitor, evaluate and develop coaching practice. It will provide the candidate with the ability to refine the coaching programme and evaluate players’ performance. It will also enable candidates to monitor and develop their own personal practice and assist with the development of the coaching practice of others involved in supporting the programme.

LO1 Utilise new “What” coaching skills to plan, deliver and critically review ones own coaching sessions in a systematic and progressive manner, in preparation for effective, competent coaching in the community at world rugby ‘full rules’ level. To include knowledge and understanding of the critical components underlying the long term player development model (14-adult)
LO2 Critically analyse a variety of coaching methods and from a coaching perspective, use the data to improve the skill development of a variety of players. In addition, critically reflect on coaching strategies and assess the impact on the effectiveness of the outcomes – based on your coaching philosophy.
LO3 Utilise highly specialised skills and strategies for improvement in Individual player performance, Units and team performance, personal coaching development and training programme design related to senior level and applicable to IRB/UKCC Level 3 Coaching Rugby Union.

Practical evidence from themes such as; Principles of Attack, Principles of Defence, Set Piece Strategy (player roles and responsibilities) Kick/Chase strategy, Breakdown strategy etc. The portfolio must also include a comprehensive and detailed analysis of Northern versus Southern hemisphere brands of the game, with reference to how each hemisphere approaches the game and how they manage and build performances. 0 8400 70 No 40
