Module Aims

The aim of this module is to encourage the students to:

Make connections between experiential knowledge, including work-based and academic knowledge.

Relate their own learning, study and work experience to the professional context of their subject pathway.

Recognise the value of both individual and collaborative learning.

Have an appreciation of all aspects of academic discourse, written and oral.

Develop context within the academic environment.

Content Summary

Research Techniques: Textbooks, academic journals, media, internet, scientific, academic referencing and plagiarism.

Assignment writing skills: Writing in an academic style (e.g. synopsis, introduction, discussion, conclusion); Understanding questions (e.g. evaluation, compare & contrast, discussion, interpretation, critical analysis, recommendations); Working collaboratively in a group; Time management.

Presentation skills: IT skills (e.g. PowerPoint, prezi.com, Keynote), public speaking, appropriate content and layout.

Vocational skills: Personal development plans; Target setting; Self-reflection; Enterprise skills.
