Module Aims

The aim of this module is to enable students to gain the fundamental social, interpersonal and academic building blocks for a vibrant and successful University experience. In addition the module aims to equip students with transferable professional skills that enable them to function in a professional environment.

Content Summary

Academic Skills will address:
Understanding individual learning styles and to utilise a range of learning methods
Develop reflection and problem-solving skills
Developing writing skills for University and professional environments
Awareness of University’s rules and regulations i.e. student charter, Assessment and Progression, academic conduct
Using the Harvard referencing System in line with the University guidelines
Professional use email and competent use of software for word processing, spread sheets and presentation
Producing appropriate academic pieces of work, namely essays, reports, portfolios, presentations, critical analyses.
Research Skills will address:
Effective use of the library resources
Effective use of search engines and data basesTechniques for note taking, summarising and synthesising information from a range of sources
Organising notes and data for easy retrieval
An introduction to qualitative and quantitative research methods and their application to the academic and work environments
How to plan a small scale research project
Ethical considerations for researching
Presentation skills and the use of IT applications to produce visuals
Professional skills will address:
How to work collaboratively
Communication skills, confidence building, teamwork, self-analysis and reflection
Planning and prioritising work related tasks
Planning and structuring written work, reports and presentations
Writing reports, case notes, plans relevant to the professional work environment
General skills, such as planning workload, managing stress, managing time and construction of Personal Development Plan
CVs, job applications and interviews
Identifying opportunities for professional development within the chosen career pathway, sources of funding, development planning (CPD)
