Module Aims

To introduce the scientific approach to studying childhood and adolescence

To explore how childhood and adolescence are viewed by different academic disciplines

Content Summary

The module will compare and contrast different academic approaches to the study of childhood and adolescence. This will include definitions, conceptual issues and ways of researching children and young people. The module will debate the idea of childhood and adolescence as distinct stages in the lifespan and then will look at a range of issues. These include the history of the concepts of childhood and adolescence; contemporary issues in childhood and adolescence including government policies in relation to childhood and adolescence; sociological, psychological, educational and anthropological perspectives on childhood. The scientific approach and methods of researching childhood and adolescence will also be addressed in this module; including ethical and practical issues associated with each method.

Independent formative assessment tasks will be included as part of this module which will support students’ completion of summative assessments.
