Module Aims

To provide a broad introduction to issues and approaches to working therapeutically with children

To introduce the principles of a number of specific types of therapeutic intervention

Content Summary

This module will examine some basic issues related to working therapeutically with children and young people, including professional and ethical issues (e.g. issues of safeguarding, equality and diversity, children’s rights). The module will also cover an introduction to psychopathology in the context of children and young people and approaches to the assessment and diagnosis of psychopathology with a specific focus on this group An overview of different childhood disorders (such as externalising and internalising problems) will be provided. Finally students will be introduced to the basic principles of different therapeutic approaches, which may include behaviour analysis, the creative therapies (e.g. play therapy), cognitive behavioural therapy.
