Module Aims

To extend students’ understanding and experience in methods used when researching children and young people.

To provide opportunities to gain practical experience of researching in this area.

Content Summary

The module will look at qualitative and quantitative approaches to research and the strengths and limitations of each approach; research methods specifically for studying development, including longitudinal, cross-sectional, time-lag and microgenetic methods; basic statistical methods; ethical and practical issues in researching children and young people. Students will also return to debates around ethical and practical issues associated with researching children and young people and will consider these in the context of new methodologies included in this module. Finally opportunities to complete practical research projects (both qualitative and quantitative) will give students experience of researching topics relevant to the study of children and young people.
