Module Aims

To explore some influential policies that have influenced the lives of children and young people, particularly in areas such as education, care and the criminal justice system.

Content Summary

The module will explore some of the factors that influence policy making including broad cultural and social factors, political priorities, international influences, significant events as well as findings from academic research with children and young people. The module will also explore the effects of devolution in the UK and its impact on work with children and young people. Various significant policy initiatives and their impacts will be examined, such as Every Child Matters, early interventions such as Sure Start and Flying Start and the Early Years curricula in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The module will also look at children and the legal system, including issues of children’s rights, child and youth offending and children as witnesses.
