Module Aims
To develop critical evaluation of key theoretical and research perspectives in social and developmental Psychology.
Content Summary
Students will develop a critical understanding of key theoretical and research elements within the social and developmental domains of Psychology. This will include a deeper critical appraisal of the role that conceptual and historical issues play in current thinking on these topics. There will be a strong focus on biological and cultural theories of development and social constructionist approaches, with topics including typical and atypical development across the
lifespan, attachment, social relations and cognitive
and language development. Social Psychology will be explored within this context and will include topics such as social cognition and social identity approaches as will topics such as attitudes, attribution and social influence. These will be contextualised with reference to individual differences including cultural diversity, positive Psychology, personality and intelligence as well as to the students’ own specialisms (e.g. sport and exercise, criminological or counselling/mental health contexts). These will be supported by formative assessment and directed study opportunities linked to elements of
the summative portfolio assessment.
