Document Version Information

Version 1
Valid From 09 Feb 2018
Valid To 31 Aug 2026

Module Aims

To provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate the application of highly advanced level graphic communication design skills to a challenging and complex problem with autonomy.

To employ the Graphic Communication Design process of research, development, visualisation, production, presentation and evaluation in the completion of a complex major design task.

Content Summary

Topics considered in this module will be selected by individual students in consultation with tutors. Areas to be considered will vary between individual students. There is considerable flexibility and students may select topics from a wide range of possibilities which might include:

• Typography and new applications.

• Emerging Print Technologies.

• Legibility in Web Design.

• UX and UI / Interface Design.

• Information Design.

• Signage and Navigation: Actual and Virtual.

• Industry led briefs

The subject matter, nature and depth of the project must be concurrent with the level expected of an MA Student and should be sufficiently complex and challenging to display the student’s skills to their best ability.

The Major Project will consist of:

The sustained application of advanced skills to the design process involved in the agreed design task.

Specifically, this will involve:

A sufficiently challenging Design Brief with the problem, its context, audience and operation clearly defined.

Relevant and focused research on the subject including a thorough investigation of literature, web and interactive references, as well as consideration of similar products/artifacts/services existing in the chosen subject area marketplace.

Effective idea generation involving a range of appropriate techniques such as lateral thinking, brainstorming and mind mapping.

Effective initial realisation of a range of creative design solutions that clearly communicate the approach to the problem.

Clear progression and development of original design solutions involving appropriate traditional and/or new technological media in line with the projects’ aims.

Informed reasoning and selection of final designs based on sound consideration of the problem, brief and defined criteria. Decisions made must be appropriate and defendable in relation to aesthetic and technological factors.

A professional working design solution well presented in appropriate format (s).

A comprehensive Design Report detailing each stage of the design process and conclusions drawn from the undertaking of the project.

A clear, coherent and informed record of all stages of the process, which places the task in the context of contemporary design and professional design practices.

Students are expected to defend both the Design Project and the Design Report to tutors and peers.

Reading List

The Major Project reading will very much depend on the topic chosen by the student. It will be the subject of discussion between tutors and students as to appropriate books and journals. In some cases, and depending on the style of the investigation, primary data will be used.
