Module Aims

To encourage critical assessment of factors which affect development in childhood and adolescence.

Content Summary

This module will introduce students to theories which relate to child and adolescent development. The module will explore current theoretical perspectives in developmental psychology such as attachment, language acquisition, cognitive, social and emotional development. It will focus on factors which may positively or negatively impact the development of young people.

Specific focus will be given to social relationships (with parents, peers & caregivers) and transitions (school and work) and these will be considered within the context of ethics and professional practice when working with children and young people.  A particular focus of this module will therefore be how knowledge of child and adolescent development can be applied in work related settings and this will be demonstrated through the use of role plays and work simulations.
