Module Aims

This module aims to:

Enable students to apply their learning to setting up and maintaining play therapy interventions within a clinical setting; including adherence to ethical and legal frameworks relevant to Play Therapy practice.

Enable students to engage with and benefit from personal therapy.

Enable students to develop reflective skills in relation to the role of their personal experiences and how these inform their professional practice.

Content Summary

Students will be guided through the process of establishing and maintaining clinical placement.

Students will be introduced to BAPT codes of ethics and practice, including legal and professional considerations in relation to how therapeutic decisions are made, using case scenarios and problem-based learning.

Students will be introduced to relevant statutory frameworks including the role of social services (safeguarding) in child oriented voluntary agencies. They will explore an overview of the legal, ethical and safeguarding frameworks relevant to work with children and families, including health & safety at work legislation as it applies to play therapy practice.

The module will introduce research pertinent to the value of personal therapy in developing and promoting effective personal insight and awareness.

Students should aim to complete 30 hours of clinical practice in year 1, 15 hours of clinical supervision and 20 hours of personal therapy. However, the minimum requirements for completing this module are:

Students will complete 20 hours of clinical practice, 10 hours of clinical supervision and 20 hours of personal therapy. Students will be required to keep a reflective diary documenting their therapeutic experiences and to produce an essay on the value of personal therapy in informing practice.

LO1 Work safely and ethically within clinical practice and supervision, with a comprehensive understanding of relevant legal, health & safety and ethical frameworks, including knowledge of BAPT core competencies for Play Therapists.
LO2 Demonstrate a critical understanding of Child Centred Play Therapy principles in planning and delivery of Play Therapy interventions within a clinical setting.
LO3 Critically reflect upon the importance of self-awareness and personal development through the use of personal therapy and in professional practice as a trainee Play Therapist.
