Module Aims

To develop a critical awareness of the links between the determinants of health and health inequalities and to relate this to theories of ethics and justice.

To draw together and build on elements of earlier health improvement models to take a theory-based approach to reducing health inequalities.

To explore the scope of planning health improvement interventions, including health needs assessment, use of planning models, identifying priorities, concept mapping, action planning, securing resources and stakeholder engagement.

To develop a critical awareness of the methods and challenges of evaluating health improvement interventions.

To explore the importance of alliances and partnerships in reducing health inequalities, including joint planning and outcomes based approaches.

To draw together and build on elements of earlier modules; including theories and models of improving health, facilitating change, communication, policy and law; to form a comprehensive picture of health improvement in practice and link this to career opportunities and aspirations.

Theories and evidence-based approaches for reducing health inequalities

Ethics of health inequalities and health improvement

Use of theories and models in planning and implementing health improvement interventions

Health needs assessment in planning health improvement interventions

Use of evidence in planning health improvement – applying theory to practice

Community engagement in planning and evaluating health improvement interventions, including building on existing skills and resources within a community

Conceptualising evaluation – importance of evaluation as an early stage of planning, process versus outcomes, methodology, challenges
