Module Aims

To provide an appreciation of the genesis and development of philosophies that dominate thinking and policy in various health care disciplines. 

To give the student a firm comprehension and integration of the basic knowledge and foundational palpatory & examination techniques necessary to practice chiropractic. 

To provide the student with contemporary information relative to the current practice of chiropractic by taking a critical view of the available literature and evidence. 

To introduce a variety soft tissue techniques, 

 Introduction to clinical orthopaedic assessment and movement screening 

Learn to Coach common strength and conditioning exercises 

Content Summary

The history and practice associated with science, medicine and chiropractic principles. 

Critical review on concepts of Posture. Definition, spinal curves, static and dynamic postural/movement assessment  

Basic principles and procedures of joint assessment including, static & dynamic motion palpation plus joint play and end feel characteristics. 

Art of Manipulation: basic manipulative concepts including drop mechanism mechanics differences between manipulation and mobilisation, motor control reflexes and stances 

Anatomical landmark location of the spine, extremities and related soft tissues 

Joint Play Assessment of the hand and foot and other major extremity joints. 

Static Joint Challenge of the Spine in the prone posture 

Dynamic Thrust Skill learning - ski/fencer stance & triceps flick etc. 

Basic Motion Palpation of the Spine 

Introduction to a variety of soft tissue techniques, (i.e. massage, trigger point therapy) 

Specific techniques for muscle testing and stretching 

Introduction to contemporary exercise rehabilitation coaching  

Introduction to Functional movement screening 

Introduction to Pain Neuroscience Education 

Introduction to Orthopaedic assessment

LO1 Demonstrate an understanding of the formulation and evolution of health paradigms (Inclusive of Chiropractic History) leading up to the influence of the BioPsychoSocial model within a Chiropractic education
LO2 Systematically locate, name and discuss the important anatomical landmarks and soft tissue structures of the spine, pelvis, and extremities during the initial phases of Clinical Orthopaedic assessment
LO3 Perform basic motion and static palpation analysis techniques of the various regions of the spine and the extremities including soft tissue palpation. Perform (Passive skills) rudimentary psychomotor thrust skills, stretching and therapeutic soft tissue techniques AND perform (Active skills) basic exercise coaching and movement screening.
