Module Aims
The aims of this module are to:
To enable students to apply an in-depth knowledge of public health principles to chiropractic practice.
To introduce students to the theories of motivation for change in regards to health behaviours.
Content Summary
History of public health including major milestones
Definition of public health – public health as ‘everyone’s business’
Concepts of health, wellbeing, illness, disease
Health inequalities
Determinants of health (health promotion)
Introduction to promoting and improving health
Global perspectives and challenges on social, economic, behavioural, environmental and metabolic risk factors for non-communicable diseases experienced by the world
Risk factors (e.g. unhealthy diet; physical inactivity; tobacco use; harmful use of alcohol; etc.)
Prevention of non-communicable diseases (e.g. diabetes; osteoporosis; cardiovascular diseases; cancer; etc.)
Nutritional supplements
An overview of mental health issues relevant to chiropractic practice including: dementia, anxiety, depression and a variety mental health problems.
Health and illness from general systems perspective, whereby biological, psychological and social systems (biopsychosocial model) interact and influence an individual’s mental health status and understanding the roles of other healthcare workers in an interdisciplinary environment.
Psychological principles to public health promotion and behaviour change (e.g. Transtheoretical or stages of change model; motivational interviewing; etc.)
