Module Aims

To develop reflective, resilient, lifelong learners who engage in purposeful professional learning and development experiences.

To develop academic skills required for success in higher education.

To develop Welsh language skills and undertake activities which can be used in an educational setting.

Content Summary

University-based sessions:

Introduce the use and application of academic skills that will support students in succeeding in higher education at level 4.

Introduce reflective practice as a learning and development tool and explore reflective theory, resilience, observational skills and lifelong learning.

Understand the principles of effective learning and pedagogy, which allow students to demonstrate an awareness of national priorities in education e.g. Welsh culture, digital competence, the poverty agenda, Social Services and Well-being Act (2014) and safeguarding.

An introduction to educational theory and explore how this underpins current practice.

Examine the history of education in Wales and the UK with a focus on current context.

Develop personal Welsh language skills which can be applied in practice.

Develop knowledge and skills to support innovative digital approaches to learning.

School-based placement:

Students to gain awareness of school and class routines, policies, resources and planning for the period of the placement, including the expectations of the portfolio assessment. The module will also provide opportunities for students to undertake focused observations of learning and professional activities e.g. collaboration with school-based staff and research into topics of interest to be explored during the placement.

Students will be required to familiarise themselves with key school policies relating to national priorities e.g. child protection, health and safety, behaviour management, well-being, the Cwricwlwm Cymreig, Digital Competence, differentiation, numeracy and literacy.

Students will be required to attend a school-based setting where they will focus on specific educational/ theoretical aspects in collaboration with school-based staff. For example, students will work with small groups of learners as identified by the class teacher, supporting them to improve outcomes and will be expected to plan, deliver and resource sessions to motivate, challenge and support pupils in their learning.
