To equip students with the knowledge and underlying concepts and principles associated with children’s learning and developmental by examining:

Child development Theories, key theorists and environmental influences.

Current research policy and practice in the field.

Related Emergent issues.

Content Summary

This module will, for example, explore, analyse and develop an understanding of:

Key learning theorists 

  • Social, emotional, physical and intellectual development  

  • Observing children  

  • Schematic development in young children  

  • Global influences on child development 

  • Play in childhood ; deprivation of play ; risky play   

  • Theories of learning and approaches to teaching  

  • United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)  

  • Vulnerable children and ACES

  • Media impact 

  • Digital impact 

  • Sexualisation of children and young people
