Module Aims

To recognise the characteristics of child development and how to effectively support learning through the Curriculum for Wales and the Areas of Learning and Experience and the Non maintained curriculum for nursery settings.  

To develop knowledge and understanding of the 4 Purposes of the Curriculum in Wales and the 12 Pedagogical Principles. 

To develop knowledge and understanding of how to plan for holistic, child centred, authentic learning experiences within the curriculum /Areas of Learning and Experience.

To consider opportunities for the development of literacy, numeracy, digital competence across the curriculum areas.

Content Summary

Introduction to the Curriculum for Wales and the Areas of Learning and Experience.

Planning for holistic, authentic learning experiences within the six Areas of Learning and Experience. 

Introduction to the 4 Purposes of the curriculum in Wales and 12 Pedagogical Principles and how they can be integrated across the Areas of Learning and Experience.

Pedagogical approaches, the Learning environments, and the role of the creative ‘adult’

Introduction to the Non- maintained Curriculum for nursery settings and the five developmental pathways 

International curricula and how they influence creative practice; a global view of policy influences (OECD/ PISA) 

Exploration of a range of suitable resources to support development across the curriculum / Areas of Learning and Experience.

Identification of opportunities to develop literacy, numeracy, digital competence through the Areas of Learning and Experience.

Respond and reflect on performance and develop reflective skills.
