Module Aims

Enable students to develop a critical understanding of the key theoretical principles of integration in relation to the key principles of Humanistic/Existential approaches in counselling theory and practice.

Develop students critical awareness of ethical and legal issues in relation to professional counselling practice, including introducing the professional role of counsellor.

Develop students critical awareness of context in relation to socio/political/cultural narratives that influence clients and the counselling process.

Content Summary

Theory & Practice:

A critical overview of the historical development of different counselling epistemologies, e.g. post modernism, social constructionism, pluralism.

A critical introduction to integration in counselling and psychotherapy.

The consideration of different models of integration, e.g. pluralistic; relational.

Humanistic theory/practice when working in-person, online and via phone, e.g. Person-Centred, Existential.

Ethical and legal frameworks that inform practice and supervision when working therapeutically in-person, online and via phone, e.g. BACP Ethical Framework; BACP Competencies for Online & Phone Therapy

Principles of practice when working in-person, online and via phone, i.e. contracting, note taking, confidentiality, data protection, self-care and supervision.

Awareness of the dimensions of diversity in identity for self and in therapeutic practice, when working in-person, online and via phone, e.g. racial, cultural, socio-economic, religious, gender, sexuality, disability and so forth.

Skills

The development and facilitation of core and advanced communication and therapeutic skills for counselling and psychotherapy, in-person, on-line and via phone; including contracting, rapport building, empathic responding, session structuring, building and repairing a therapeutic alliance, working with psychological processes, immediacy, phenomenological enquiry, goal setting and endings.

Skills workshops including role play/simulations, video and audio recording of skills practice and self and peer evaluation.

Academic critical review and writing skills appropriate to level 7.

There is an expectation of weekend delivery throughout this module to support professional and personal development.
