Module Aims

Enable students to critically consider and evaluate the key theoretical principles of integration in relation to the key principles of Relational Psychodynamic counselling theory and practice.

Introduce students to research evidence and the different research methodologies which underpin the different theoretical approaches in counselling theory and practice.

Further develop students’ core and advanced counselling skills relevant to professional practice, including assessment and formulation.

Content Summary

Theory & Practice:

Critical evaluation of integration in counselling and psychotherapy.

Critical overview of the evidence base for integrative counselling and psychotherapy, e.g. NICE Guidelines, Evidence Based Practice, Practice Based Research, Online & Phone Therapy.

Relational Psychodynamics, i.e. Object Relations, Intersubjectivity, Attachment Theory, Self-Psychology and Psychosynthesis i.e. Transpersonal.

Development of research awareness of different methodologies and how these underpin counselling theory and practice; with a specific focus on qualitative approaches.

Assessment and case formulation within an integrative approach when working in-person, online or via telephone, including assessment of suitability for engaging with therapeutic work online or via telephone.

Integrative approaches to working intersectionally with specific presentations in-person, online or via telephone, e.g. depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicidal intention, trauma, bereavement, loss and grief.

Skills

Development of advanced counselling skills when working in-person, online or via telephone, including endings, transference and countertransference, embodiment.

Skills workshops including role play/simulations, video and audio recording of skills practice and self and peer evaluation.

Academic writing and critical review skills appropriate to level 7.

There is an expectation of weekend delivery throughout this module to support professional and personal development.
