Module Aims

Enable students to critically consider and evaluate a CBT approach, including third wave CBT, within an pluralistic and relational model of integration.

Facilitate students to critically consider and understand different ways of conceptualising psychological [mental] health and well-being, including understanding of the interface between psychopharmacological approaches and psychotherapeutic practice.

Facilitate students in the development and intentional use of advanced counselling skills in professional practice.

Content Summary

Advanced Theory & Practice

The critical evaluation and application of CBT theory & skills when working in-person, online and via telephone.

Third wave CBT including Mindfulness, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and Compassionate Focused Therapy.

History of mental health and its influence on contemporary approaches to distress, wellbeing, and recovery.

Conceptualisations and medical classifications of psychopathology - to bio-psycho-social-spiritual perspectives and more trauma-informed approaches.

Types and uses of psychopharmacological drugs and their impact on the individual: Benefits and limitations, and the Interface between psychopharmacology and therapeutic practice when working in-person, online and via telephone.

Advanced Skills

The development, facilitation and application of CBT skills when working in-person, online and via telephone - working in an intentional and informed way. e.g. thought records, formulations, behavioural experiments, cognitive restructuring.

Skills workshops including role play/simulations, video and audio recording of skills practice and self and peer evaluation.

There is an expectation of weekend delivery throughout this module to support professional and personal development.
