Module Aims

Enable students to develop a critical understanding of the role of a professional counsellor working in a variety of settings, in order to prepare students for employment.

Facilitate students to critically articulate and work with the impact of context in relation to socio/political/cultural narratives that influence clients and the counselling process.

Enable students to develop group facilitation skills to support the delivery and facilitation of a group relevant to professional practice to a group of peers.

Content Summary

Using a personal development groups to cultivating self-awareness to develop skills in giving and receiving feedback, working with challenge and recognising patterns of relating.

Developing an awareness of self in relation to others and past, present and future

Working with difference and diversity in groups and professional practice.

Group work in counselling professional practice

Engaging with more than one person, analysis of interactional and interpersonal patterns in working with groups.

Theories of group process, development and processes of change in groups (e.g. Bion, Foulkes, Yalom)

Developing skills in group facilitation

Facilitating a group with peers related to professional practice.

Ongoing professional practice and development – developing a portfolio of experience, skills and practice.
