Module Aims

To develop knowledge, confidence and competence in the strategic skills involved in leadership and professional development within policing. It further aims to embed the governance framework which supports the professional conduct and standards necessary for maintaining professional standards and developing key leadership skills.

Content Summary

Examining the notion of policing as a ‘profession’.

Evaluate leadership and management in the context of policing and relevant national policing strategies.

  • Analyse the role that independent bodies such as the IOPC or HMICFRS play in holding the police accountable to the public.

Critically review key issues relating to the complexity and challenges of delivering operational policing.

Developing leadership and confidence within a Policing context.

  • Develop intricate understanding of the College of Policing Competency and Values Framework for Policing with the aim of preparing for the recruitment process and selection for the police.

Module Summary (CoP only)

This module examines the necessity for maintaining professional standards in policing and further examines governance, roles and responsibilities. Covering fair, ethical and unbiased delivery of policing services; professional standards and the roles and responsibilities of disciplinary procedures and the IOPC (formerly IPCC) in serious cases; it offers students the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in leadership through the examination of theory and practice and embedding personal reflective practice in line with national policing strategies and professional standards.
