Module Aims

To enable the Student Veterinary Nurse to attain competency in at least 10% of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills, facilitating a growing proficiency and confidence during a Clinical Placement setting in a small animal veterinary training practice.

Content Summary

The content of this module will be applied across all domains of veterinary nursing practice and includes:

Demonstrating awareness of animal welfare and maintaining a safe and sustainable environment.

Managing a healthy approach to work and demonstrating a fitness to practice, to include developing an understanding of sustainability of the veterinary team.

Upholding the principles set out by the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Nurses.

Practice-based learning and becoming a reflective practitioner, to include developing an understanding of Clinical Governance, Quality Improvement and the Clinical Audit and the importance of One Health.

Application of the nursing process: assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation for patient-centred care.

Working effectively with Clinical Supervisors, assessors and other veterinary professionals.

Communicating professionally with clients and other relevant authorities.

Completion of at least 10% of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Nursing Progress Log (NPL) Day One Skills.

Preparation towards the practical examinations in the following domains: medication administration, bandaging, handling, infection control, pharmacy.

This module includes 300 hours of experience in a small animal veterinary training practice.

The RCVS Day One Competences and Day One Skills for Veterinary Nurses are the minimum essential requirements that all student veterinary nurses are expected to have met in order to join the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses. Further information can be found at www.rcvs.org.uk

The content of this module will cover the following RCVS Day One Competences: 1, 4-5, 7-9, 12-14, 17, 24-26, 35.

The content of this module will cover the following RCVS Day One Skills for Veterinary Nurses: 1.1-1.2, 2.1-2.3, 2.7, 2.9-2.11, 3.1-3.5, 4.5-4.12, 7.1-7.3, 8.3-8.4.
