Module Aims
To introduce student teachers to the curriculum and lesson planning to meet the needs of all learners, as they apply to the day-to-day practice of teachers.
To develop student teachers’ understanding of key teacher skills such as behaviour for learning, inclusive practice, safeguarding and resource design.
To contribute to the achievement of teaching standards for Qualified Teacher Status identified in the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership.
Content Summary
This module develops the wider professional skills of student teachers to begin to develop an understanding of the role of a teacher.
Knowledge of the following areas are covered in this module:
Working with the four purposes of the curriculum and their implication for curriculum design, and lesson planning.
Working with the four purposes of the curriculum to plan to meet the needs of all learners.
Signature pedagogies for teaching, the ‘three habits’ and developing pedagogical content knowledge.
Establishing positive relationships with learners and colleagues.
Safeguarding and the Prevent Duty.
The role of well-being in effective learning, including the ability to identify learners who are at risk of experience poor well-being, including examining the most effective models deployed by schools and their partners to improve the well-being of all learners.
Supporting student teachers to manage their workload by exploring evidence-informed strategies to support wellbeing and resilience.
Evidence-informed strategies to explore anti-racist practice, to celebrate diversity and promote inclusivity.
Working with the pedagogical principles of the curriculum: Effective communication and questioning.
Working with the pedagogical principles of the curriculum: Effective evidence-based approaches to literacy and numeracy.
Working with the pedagogical principles of the curriculum: Designing and using materials for learning and teaching to stimulate, support and challenge all learners.
Working with the pedagogical principles of the curriculum: Effective evidence-based approaches to using digital technologies and blended learning approaches to enhance learning.
Working with the pedagogical principles of the curriculum: How to assess and use assessment outcomes to support learners’ progress.
