Module Aims

To enable student teachers to gain subject knowledge of Mathematics and Numeracy; Languages, Literacy and Communication; Science and Technology and Welsh Language Development for the relevant stage of learning.  

To enable student teachers to acquire and develop the skills for creative, inclusive and effective delivery and assessment of experiential learning for the relevant stage of learning.  

To develop student teachers’ understanding and skills in developing an integrated approach to providing meaningful language learning experiences, fostering a sense of identity, cultural awareness and belonging to Wales as well as the world. 

To contribute to the achievement of teaching standards for Qualified Teacher Status as set out in the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership.

Content Summary

Knowledge of the following areas will be covered in this module, as they relate to the Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs) for Languages, Literacy and Communication (including Welsh); Mathematics and Numeracy; Science and Technology: 

  • Planning for authentic learning experiences with clear attention to Welsh language development within and across the specified AoLEs in order to develop learners’ skills, knowledge and understanding and to makes links across learning. 

  • Planning opportunities to develop: 

Ambitious, capable learners; 

Enterprising, creative contributors; 

Ethical informed citizens; 

Healthy, confident individuals; 

and to do so creatively and collaboratively through and across the specific AoLEs. 

  • Consideration of how learners learn with focus on the specified AoLEs and differentiation to meet the needs of all learners. 

  • Familiarity with stages of development to plan appropriately for challenges in the learning environment. 

  • Exploring role play and outdoor learning: the value of role-play and outdoor learning in developing cross-curricular skills across the curriculum.? 

  • How to develop learners’ skills in literacy, numeracy and digital competence through and across the specified AoLEs. 

  • Exploration of a range of suitable resources, including digital tools and outdoor learning environments to support learning in the specified AoLEs and relating this to the development of pedagogical content knowledge. 

For Welsh medium students: Personal Welsh language skills and pedagogies for teaching through the medium of Welsh are developed in Gloywi sessions.
