Module Aims
To continue to develop as reflective, resilient, lifelong learners, purposefully engaged in their own professional learning and development and well-being.
To consolidate student teachers’ ability to adapt and use appropriate time management strategies to manage workload effectively.
To extend student teachers’ understanding of requirements of self and peer assessment practices and evaluate relevant concepts and approaches.
To further develop and extend student teachers’ knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to their roles and responsibilities and contribute to the achievement of the descriptors for Qualified Teacher Status identified in the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership.
Content Summary
Student teachers undertake two blocks of school experience. Of these, a total of eight full weeks will be spent in school, with a further three blended weeks (a mixture of in-school and on-campus to support student teachers to make progress towards their specific targets) plus a two-week curriculum design project split on campus and in school.
Building on Professional Development and Learning module 1, student teachers will:
teach, observed by a qualified member of school staff, their lecturer, or both; teaching will start with small group teaching, or delivery of a short activity to larger groups, building to teaching of whole lessons and then sequences of lessons, in order that student teachers learn to undertake long-term, medium-term and individual lesson planning, preparation and assessment.
undertake wider professional duties associated with teaching, including involvement in, and delivery of, CPD activity with colleagues.
engage with research activity in on campus sessions, in Synergy Days in lead schools and with mentors on school experience.
Engage with policy and practice in additional learning needs (ALN), anti-racism, equality, sustainability, social justice, wellbeing, reducing the impact of poverty, inequity and disadvantage on pupils’ progress and attainment.
meet weekly with mentors, both to discuss their own learning and to learn about wider school-related professional duties.
develop as critically engaged, reflective practitioners who take responsibility for their own learning and progress.
be supported to develop their Welsh language skills in-line with the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership and the Welsh Language Competency Framework.
Student teachers are required to collate evidence of meeting the descriptors for Qualified Teacher Status in the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership. This is evidenced via the Professional Learning Passport (PLP) which is housed in the PebblePad platform provided by the Education Workforce Council.
