Module Aims

To provide a broad introduction and balanced coverage of the principles and practice of logistics, procurement operations and supply chain management.

The importance of recognising and managing the holistic supply chain is being increasingly seen as a key constituent of any organisations' ability to deliver value to its customers and stakeholders.

Supply chain management is an all-encompassing strategic philosophy which analyses the system as a whole, requiring students to have an appreciation of the impact this type of management has on traditional management structures and philosophies.

Content Summary

Important part of the undergraduate programme. Understanding the concepts is essential for any business.

Indicative content includes:

  • Identifying and analysing the key organisational factors that contribute to procurement and supply chain management and the impact it will have on organisational management.
  • Identifying and analysing the key inter-organisational factors that contributes to effective supply chain management. With emphasis on comparing the academic theory against the 'real-world' environment.
  • Exploring the issues associated with ethical and sustainable supply chain management and the strategic impact this has.

There will be an emphasis on procurement as a key focus of supply chain management:

  • Procurement elements include the role, value, structure and function of the subject.
  • General tactical areas such as purchasing methods (incl. e-procurement), quality aspects of supply, and negotiation are introduced.
  • Principles of sourcing, supplier selection, costs and stock control are covered.
  • An insight into storage, handling methods and supply and value chain concepts is given.
  • Key relevant areas of law (contracts) are covered.
  • Public sector procurement and its contribution to the wider the economy and the focus on SME’s and community benefits.
  • The matching of supply and demand and the customer (sales)/supplier relationships are considered.
  • Ethics in procurement and supply chain will also be covered in the form of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply Professional Code of Ethics.

The module will also introduce the downstream concepts of the supply chain, highlighting the interface between procurement and operations and logistics. Operations management explores the concepts of the “Transformational Process” as well as quality management in terms of quality control and quality assurance. The students are introduced to the concept of logistics as a linkage between the tiers of the supply chain, utilizing multi-modal solutions to add time and place value to the customer.

Examples will be used to contextualise discussions for cohorts studying Pathways and Specialist courses.
