Module Aims

This module aims to develop the essential skills of writing the news for all media. This includes examining in detail current news stories and their construction and applying those conclusions to a range of stories, both exercises and original journalism. This module will complement the other first year journalism modules and give students a firm base to continue their practical studies into year two.

Content Summary

An in-depth study of newspaper journalism intros from tabloids/ so-called ‘quality’ newspapers and local papers. The ‘rules’ of newspaper intro writing

Applying those rules – exercises & original journalism.

An in-depth study of radio journalism intros, from bulletins to news programmes. The ‘rules’ of radio news intro writing.

Applying those rules – exercises & original journalism.

 

Other Prerequisite(s):

An in-depth study of TV journalism intros, from bulletins to news programmes. The ‘rules’ of TV news intro writing.

Applying those rules – exercises & original journalism.

An in-depth study of news feature intros, from newspapers to magazines. The ‘rules’ of news feature intro writing.

Applying those rules – exercises & original journalism. Developing the story – the ‘inverted pyramid’ model. Using quotes correctly.

Ending the story.
