Module Aims

This module aims to critically explore and examine project management skills in a business context. Enabling students to understand and explore relevant and key project management techniques and principles and the impact that they have on operations and business processes.

Content Summary

The module explores the essential aspects of planning, running and evaluating a project. These core elements will provide the structure of the delivery and incorporate a range of elements such as:

  • What is a project and its attributes.

  • Identifying common managerial issues.

  • Characteristics of the project process.

  • The strategy and scope for a project.

  • The role of key stakeholders in a project.

  • The project management process and ‘life-cycle’.

  • Identifying the ‘need for a project’ – how are projects initiated

  • Setting project objectives.

  • Designing and implementing a project plan.

  • The formation of project proposals.

  • Type of costs involved and financial evaluation techniques.

  • SWOT of a project.

  • Recognise the effects of risk and uncertainty within a project and Identify suitable strategies for dealing with them.

  • The range of methodologies and systems used in managing projects.

  • To evaluate, through selected review and audit, the learning outcomes of a project.

  • Project management tools.

  • To distinguish the key tools and techniques that would be needed to be applied in the project process, including the evaluation of proposals.

  • Gantt charts, networks (CPA)/activity on a node, Computing EST/LST, critical path, floats and slack, histograms.

Examples will be used to contextualise discussions for cohorts studying Pathways and Specialist courses.
