Module Aims

To introduce students to the particular problems and opportunities experienced in adopting or ignoring business ethics and corporate social responsibility.

To develop students critical understanding of sustainable business issues and how they can be managed, promoted and developed in a business context.

Content Summary

Environmental orientation and the three main goals of sustainable development; Social, economic and environmental goals.

Areas of activity for sustainable business and the development of business strategies for sustainability with reference to sufficiency, consistency and efficiency

Transformation processes taking place during the exchange between business nature and society.

Operations management for sustainable production, energy and resource use and value chain analysis and operational process.

Sustainable consumption, the modern consumer and its impact on society and the wider environment.

Systems of legal regulatory, environmental and social norms and standards, the triple bottom line and how organisations report sustainability.

Corporate Social Responsibility; definitions, in practice, organisations responsibilities, governance and management of externality.

The business as a multi purpose entity and stakeholder concept. General stakeholder spheres of influence, expectations and conflict and management action.

Business Strategy to incorporate sustainable practice and environmental management systems such as EMAS and ISO14001.
