Module Aims

To enable students to critically examine, appraise and analyse the theories, concepts, legal issues and empirical research in the field of substance misuse, in order to inform and develop practice.

Content Summary

·         Key theoretical concepts surrounding addiction.

·         Professional legal ethical challenges and issues in practice.

·         Contemporary policy issues. Assessment strategies and the application of specific assessment tools.

·         Concepts of dependence.

·         Casework with service users who misuse substances.

·         Brief Interventions.

·         Motivational Interviewing.

·         Dual Diagnosis.

·         Effects of substance misuse on individuals suffering from serious mental illness.

·         Treatment approaches including harm minimization and relapse prevention strategies.

·         Home Detoxification treatment approaches.

·         Role of the multidisciplinary team and interagency working.

·         Risk management.

·         Blood-borne viruses.

·         Policy directives including ;-

  • Tackling Substance Misuse in Wales A Partnership Approach. NAW (2000)

  • Substance Misuse Treatment Framework (WAG, 2007), and Working Together to Reduce Harm: the substance misuse strategy for Wales 2008-2018 (WAG, 2008)

# Learning Outcome
LO1 Critically evaluate, appraise and analyse the broad implications of substance misuse in society and analyse key professional, legal and ethical challenges/ issues facing workers in this area of care.
LO2 Evaluate, critically analyse and deliver interventions for people who have problems/needs associated with substance misuse, within their current remit and actively promote awareness of current research findings integrating these into practice to support this specific client group which will enhance the quality of life of people who misuse substances.
