Module Aims

A key aspect of any managerial or leadership role in an international context is the ability to motivate and manage people effectively across national boundaries. This module explores the influence of national institutions and culture upon people management practices and the key issues that arise. The overarching aim is to enable students to acquire an appreciation of, and the skills necessary to meet, the challenges and opportunities presented by a multicultural workforce in 21st century global workplaces and become effective global managers and leaders of the future. This includes consideration of issues of business ethics and corporate social responsibility.

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

  • Explain and illustrate the implications for people management when businesses internationalise.
  • Critically analyse a range of theoretical models and frameworks pertaining to the behaviour of cross-border institutions, national culture and diversity management and apply them to global workplace situations.
  • Develop an appreciation of, and be able to global debate, ethical and sustainability issues.
  • Build cultural intelligence and other skills necessary to manage and lead a multicultural workforce.

The module harnesses students’ own capacity for self-learning by placing an emphasis on small group work. Students will be able to develop new skills, and build on those acquired previously, which are personally enriching and of value to employers worldwide, including, networking; virtual teamworking; the use of technology and delivering projects within timeframes.
