Module Aims

To offer experiences of delivering, leading and observing outdoor adventurous activities in an applied setting.

To work safely and responsibly in an outdoor setting, recognising boundaries of professional competence.

To demonstrate an understanding of teaching and learning strategies effective for the holistic development of young people.

Content Summary

  • Practical content will include hill and gorge walking, orienteering, paddleboarding and other outdoor contemporary activities available and weather appropriate at the time of delivery.

  • The module will embed the Hill Skills Award Criteria, which is a nationally accredited scheme developed and administered by Mountain Training who govern the national outdoor leadership awards.

  • The Hill Skills Award is designed to train and assess those who wish to lead groups on day walks in lowland countryside and woodland in summer conditions*.

  • Outdoor Emergency First Aid Qualification is embedded within the block delivery.

  • Elements of the Mountain Training Expedition Skills Module are also integrated within the residential delivery to train and assess those who wish to lead groups on multi-day camping expeditions in terrain and conditions within the scope of their leadership award.

  • The module will provide students the opportunity to understand key concepts, rationales and application techniques associated with leading activities within the outdoors. The module will be delivered through a combination of three off-campus block delivery periods, the last of which will include a mandatory residential.

  • In addition to off-campus practical delivery, on- campus induction and assessment days will be scheduled.

  • This module is targeted towards students aspiring to become teachers and outdoor activity leaders. It will focus on building knowledge, developing key skills, and obtaining industry relevant qualifications to enable the students to deliver a positive outdoor and adventurous activities well-being experience for a range of participants.

*This scheme does not provide training or assessment of the skills required to cope with the hazards of winter conditions, particularly lying snow and ice. ‘Summer conditions’ are

defined by the conditions prevailing and not by the calendar.
