Module Aims

1. To enable the student to gain practical skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the costume industry, by undertaking a period of supervised work experience on a live production.

2. To impress upon students the importance of time management and individual responsibility when working within a team.

3.To familiarise students with the principles of working creatively under the restriction of pre-determined project briefs.

4. To encourage the students to evaluate and reflect on their own work, through reflective practice, throughout the duration of the ‘live’ project.

Content Summary

Engagement with industry is seen as a key aspect of contemporary education. With this in mind students will be required to work on a ‘live’ production for this module. Throughout this period students will develop practical, communication and team work skills, as well as gaining an invaluable insight into the world of work in to which they wish to enter.

The ‘live’ brief will be set by an industry professional who will also be expected to give student feedback at the end of the production. The importance of deadlines, professionalism, quality of practical work and communication skills will also be re-enforced during the briefing.

A body of costume work will be allocated to each student which they will be responsible for cutting, making and fitting throughout the production period. Alongside this students will also work as part of a team, developing their communication and group work skills.

Under structures are given to the students to reuse and other costume pieces are recycled from past productions thus mirroring industry practice.

Individuals will be expected to time manage the tasks that are assigned to them and to adopt a good work ethic and professional approach to their work throughout the entire project. Students are each responsible for meeting any deadline set within the pre – production period and will be expected to show commitment and professionalism in all areas.

As well as experiencing pre-production, students will also experience production work by working within the world of wardrobe, by dressing shows or working on set. This will be another area of the costume world which students can explore.

Throughout the duration of the production students will keep an up to date personal reflective diary, discussing their progress and learning gained/achieved. This will encourage students to reflect upon their current skills and those expected by industry.
