Content Summary

Students will undertake a period of sustained enquiry, starting in advance of the commencement of the final year of study where they gather inspiration and ideas from a variety of different sources. Before embarking on the final year the students will have explored several scenarios for their proposal. At an initial and regular tutorials and within seminar sessions the student will work through the process of selection and rejection and development of ideas based on their argument for validity. Students will, throughout this intense period of negotiation select a genre in which to place a costume collection. The origin and context of the piece, be it historical or contemporary , and the characters which they will potentially create costumes for will be identified. A series of primary visits will be undertaken to start the process along with the identification and production of a literature review. These methods of discovery will be ongoing throughout the process and a journey of critical analysis and working process should be adopted. The essay will contain a detailed proposal and ultimately form the contract of work to be undertaken for the Major Project Costume – Realisation. The student should be able to critically back up their argument for undertaking the project and show knowledge and understanding of their concept and the future direction of it.

The presentation that accompanies the final submission of the essay will detail this proposal and should be professionally undertaken and presented. A PowerPoint presentation should contain images that reference key aspects of the proposal and state their case effectively. The presentation will be filmed and in a feedback tutorial help the student with oral presentation skills for the future presentations and within professional working scenarios.
