Module Aims

1. Use detailed independent research and reflection to evaluate and develop his/her own project.

2.Exhibit a mature approach and a personal stance, demonstrating a defensible level of understanding of the relationship between the context of the Major Project Costume – Proposal and the role of the costume maker and interpreter.

3. Formulate research, prepare specification, problem solve and continually evaluate concepts and develop a selection of prototype pieces into fully realised outcomes.

4. Manage and prepare the presentation of final work.

5. Evaluate and critically appraise own work.

6. Complete a costume collection fit for purpose and showcasing cut and construction at industry level.

Content Summary

An initial presentation to peer group and supervisor(s) and final presentation to peer group, supervisor(s) and second year cohort will give the student the opportunity to discuss research methodologies; identifying the wider perspective of a problem and present relevant research in aiming to achieve desired results. Individual brief parameters and an outline plan, production scheduling, time management and budget and costing will have been considered. This interim presentation will take the form of a toile line up.

Pieces are hired for usage alongside the construction of costumes.

Sponsorship from industry provides students with professional quality fabric and trim as part of their final collection.

Costume pieces at the interim presentation point will be presented as prototype silhouettes with sample construction and fabric selection. Development of a range of alternative ideas and identification of correct materials and processes and the most appropriate solution against set criteria. Work may be unresolved but problem solved to an advanced stage with many solutions. Execution of costume interpretation in terms of toile, sampling and developmental work will be considered.

The final presentation is a completed costume parade collection in front of a panel of industry professionals. Students will therefore have two opportunities to pitch their collection at a work in progress stage and at project completion. Critical discussion and appraisal will be undertaken On completion of final outcomes and at the last presentation completed costumes will be presented on models that the costumes were made for at a live costume parade scenario. Costumes will be wearable and fit for their intended purpose and be styled and accessorised appropriately.

In total practical outcomes are the major weighting and presentations the supported minor weighting.

Reflection and Evaluation will take place throughout the duration of the module.
