Module Aims

1. To familiarise students with the principles of working creatively under the restriction of pre-determined briefs.

2. To provide insights into methodologies, procedures and day-to-day working practices within the costume industry.

3. To provide students with an experience of working in a professional context, liaising with professional employers and production teams and contributing as an effective team member.

4. To allow students to gain further knowledge of the costume industry by researching potential job roles and career opportunities.

5. To give students the opportunity to reflect upon and develop their experience in the workplace and future working practice.

Content Summary

The module will allow students to gain further knowledge and understanding of the costume industry by researching potential job roles and career opportunities. After a period of research and analysis into the sector students will be given the opportunity to experience a professional work placement and implement the practical and personal skills and this newly gained knowledge in a real working environment at the appropriate level.

Each student will link with a professional company to undertake a period of work experience at the company headquarters, on location or at the requirements of the placement. By its nature this will provide the students with the experience of undertaking work on an externally set brief.

Student response and personal reflection will be recorded.

As part of the module the student will attend a series of workshops including an investigation into searching for jobs in the industry, where to find them and how to apply for them.

They will also build their professional identity and attend a mock interview session . Budgeting and self-assessment etc. will be covered and introduce the costume undergraduate to becoming a Freelancer in the business . They will use this knowledge to build their professional profile and focus their future direction and goals.

Planning , organisation and realisation for the final degree show will give students the opportunity to showcase their work publicly and in the appropriate setting. Their costume work will be to a professional and industry approved standard and critiqued by professionals in the industry at a preview event.

The show will also include a CV, a business card and a portfolio of work produced to date.
