Module Aims

Introduce the student to the basic use, contexts and principles of illustration in contemporary society and the creative industries.

Present the roles, relationships and responsibilities of the illustrator, creative/design agency and art/creative director.

Prepare the student to answer a brief and develop their personal creative aesthetic.

Content Summary

This module comprises two parts across 40 credits. Part one introduces students to the fundamental concepts of an illustration brief and provides an overview of the basic principles of the illustration industry. Students will learn how to respond to a brief and will be introduced to the importance of individual personality, the creative voice and context in the creative decision-making process. Students will examine illustration work from a number of different historical and social contexts.

Students will gain insight into the nature and scope of the illustration industry and begin to acquire an awareness of the relationship between the illustrator, client, art director, agency and audience in the visual communication process. They will also develop the appropriate academic skills needed to research, analyse, evaluate, and appropriately communicate informed opinions about the subject in subsequent modules.

Part one will be project based and will be made up of lectures, seminars, supervised project time and tutorials. This information will then be contextualised in part two of the module.

Part two will build on from the knowledge and understanding gained in part one. Students will apply the basic knowledge attained to an Illustration brief. This second part will encourage students to discover their own creative aesthetic and strengthen their skills in applying relevant visual language and communication to an illustrative context. An emphasis on the practical application of the creative process will be the focus, engaging students in idea generation, the creative decision-making process, image development and final realisation of their visual communication in answering a given brief.

Part two will be project based and will consist of practical sessions, supervised project and studio time and tutorials.

This module contains a six-week immersive learning element.
