Module Aims

Facilitate the student to develop an advanced understanding of illustration contexts, purpose and applications, with an emphasis on social media, opportunities and trends in the creative industries.

Encourage further progression of critical research, analytical skills and academic methodologies.

Apply written communication skills in relation to illustration practice.

Content Summary

This module will develop students understanding of the contemporary and cultural background of illustration practice and its relevance to the current context of the creative industries. Visual communication, the use of visual language and the application of images within the context of contemporary design and cultural practice will be investigated. Students will extend and develop critical, analytical and evaluative skills in relation to illustration, design and contemporary creative industries.

The module also recognises the need for students to be sufficiently prepared for their final year Critical Research module. To this end a series of lectures and workshops will cover a range critical research methods and methodologies as applied to Design and Illustration. As is the case in all other design awards specific workshops for students preparing their topic for third year study will be undertaken at the end of year two, with separate arrangements being made for direct entry or work placement students.

A combination of lectures, seminars and project supervision will allow progression through this theory-based module.
