Module Aims

To enable the student to analyse legal, ethical and professional implications of providing person centred care across a range of client groups and settings.

Content Summary

The content of this module will be applied across all four fields of nursing. Within the context of Health and Social Care the module will explore the following themes:

Professional, legal and ethical concepts and principles.
The right to health care, upholding human rights.
Becoming politically aware and influencing skills

Professional codes of conduct for example; decision-making, accountability, the duty of candour, raising concerns, whistleblowing, legal & ethical duties and standards of care,

Autonomy, advocacy, empowering people, supporting service user choice, informed consent, capacity, facilitating decision-making

Principles of vulnerability and safeguarding, deprivation of liberty/liberty, protection and safeguards and their application to all client groups.

Health and Social Care legislation and current policy back-drop from a global, national and local perspective.

Mechanisms involved in influencing policy development and change.

An understanding and review of case law in relation to Mental Health, mental capacity & Human Rights legislation

The life/death debate across the lifespan.

Organ and tissue donation protocols
Advanced expressions of choice and consent, advanced directives, lasting power of attorney

Models of decision-making, professional frameworks as applied across all fields of practice.

Principles of health politics and economics and their relevance to resource allocation in health and social care organisations and other agencies.

Recognising and preventing discrimination and promoting diversity, equality and inclusion across all fields of practice.
