Module Aims

• Facilitate an awareness of personal prejudices and their impact on individuals, families, carers and communities.

• Develop the students’ understanding of the SCW Code of Professional Practice and its impact on the professional behaviour, ethics and values of the individual.
• Explore and develop student’s knowledge base and their analytical and evaluation skills through the application of theory to practice and reflection.
• Prepare for a 20 day period of practice

Content Summary

The learning content of this module is to be achieved by a coordinated and fully integrated programme of taught sessions at the University and work based learning facilitated by our 5 Local Authority partners. Through the supervised Practice Learning Opportunity and the academic content of the taught module, the student will gain the foundation skills, knowledge, values and understanding required to establish fitness for practice at this stage of their learning. In this preparatory year, students are learning to learn, as well as learning for practice. In terms of the student experience, this module will present opportunities to foster the integration of contextual, analytical, explanatory and practical understanding in a range of social work situations and evidence how anti-oppressive, anti-discriminatory practice and applied values are embedded within their practice.
As students will be placed in a variety of settings, their assignments and presentation will reflect in more depth the individuals, carers and families with whom they are working and the communities in which they will be placed.
