Module Aims

Promote student autonomy through the selection and production of a self-set design brief.

Provide opportunity to establish a major piece of work to add to the student’s professional portfolio.

Instil a theoretical or philosophical approach to students’ design practice and awareness of how their work relates to social, commercial, or cultural contexts.

Empower students to work independently and methodically through the full design process. Encourage students to be organised and responsible for their own work and time management.

Refine the required skills for design work to be presented and communicated following professional standards.

Content Summary

On this module, students will build their skills relative to the subject area and develop increasing autonomy through a self-selected major project brief.

The module will begin with an immersive learning period, which allows students to work together to define their intentions in terms of subject, location, building, scale of intervention, proposed adaptive re-use, and potential client. Following this immersive learning period, students will determine and explain their aims and intentions as a designer, as well as the nature of the project, and how it sits within a social, commercial, industrial, historical, or cultural context.

In developing the scheme throughout the remainder of the module, students will work towards a full professional Interior Design presentation of the finalised scheme to include a representation of the project proposal, concept ideas, and all design content at an appropriate scale. The project will evolve, guided by regular workshops and feedforward sessions that will monitor project development, but the progress is heavily reliant on a great deal of self-discipline to achieve interim deadlines and a fulfilling outcome. Through this process, students will refine their research techniques and build on reference materials, along with developing a personal programme of work to establish organisational skills.
