Module Aims
• Give students a greater understanding of the techniques of visual story telling.
• Develop the practical skills in scriptwriting, camerawork, lighting, sound, editing, producing and directing necessary for fiction filmmaking.
• Develop confidence in research and writing skills, fieldwork, negotiation, organisational skills and time management.
• Encourage creative and exploratory approaches to filmmaking and develop a self-critical attitude towards all aspects of the work of self and peers.
Content Summary
The module consists of a number of formative assignments in groups intended to create an atmosphere of creative exploration, without the distraction of grades. Although non- assessed in themselves, these exercises will be evaluated.
The module consists of a series of exercises, interspersed with lectures, screenings and seminars that focus on the ‘building blocks’ of fiction narrative structures. In combination, these will address a range of issues concerning film language and visual storytelling, including:
• Fiction Narrative Devices
• Creative Application of Research
• Relationship of the actor and the camera
• Screen Aesthetics
• Editing for dramatic and emotional impact
• Expressive use of Audio Design
