Module Aims

  • Enhance greater understanding of current issues and professional development in the field of dementia practice.
  • Enable students to develop and extend existing knowledge and skill base around contemporary advances in the support of a person affected by dementia and identified carers.

Content Summary

Current issues will be explored and balanced against demographic changes/ implications of socio- political to practice.
Physiological, pathological (genomics, physical conditions), psychosocial and socio-cultural aspects which may influence the care and support of the person affected by dementia.
The carers’ perspective to include statutory and non-statutory support mechanisms.
Contemporary legislation, policy directives and relevant clinical and non-clinical guidance.
Relevant evidence-based interventions and helping approaches to include aetiology, risk reduction, pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, reablement, palliative and end-of – life support.
Current trends of care and support provision.
