Module Aims

  • Critically explore the lived experience of dementia from diagnosis to end of life care and death
  • Critically reflect on the biopsychosocial, spiritual and political factors influencing the lived experience of dementia

Content Summary

This module considers the experiences of people living with dementia, their carers and families, throughout the lifespan of the condition. It will explore various ways in which the lived experience of dementia has been analysed (including research and arts-based approaches). It will critically analyse the concept of personhood and ways in which this can be maintained for the duration of the condition. It will also consider the impact of dementia on families, wider social networks and professionals working with this client group. The module will also critically explore aspects of service provision in relation to specific dementia types (for example, people with learning disabilities and young-onset dementia). This module will enhance communication and empathetic skills in order to explore the nature of personhood within dementia care and practice.
